Kingsford Smith School

An ACT Public School

BBQ Project (2013)

Class of 2013 hard at work setting up the brick work.

The Building and construction class has been involved with the Australian Bricklayers Association to deliver practical trade skills using bricks and mortar. The first phase in 2012 had the class of 12 students over 4 days complete groundworks and then build the brickwork for the Outdoor BBQ area. The story continued in 2013 with the new round of students adding 3 tiered seating in October 2013 that will overlook the oval. To protect the work of the new additions a new pergola has been built funded by the P&C and the class of 2012 gift.

These projects have enabled our school to sign off on core competencies in agreement with Hawker College. On completion Year Ten students receive a statement of attainment that they can then use towards a certification in college.

The Unit focusses on developing technical drawing skills and hand making timber joints. Students then create their own furniture projects. Students are also given the opportunity to gain a white card.
