Electives at Kingsford Smith School
Our elective program is designed to give students the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects, develop new skills, and discover their interests.
Years 7 & 8In Years 7 and 8, students rotate through six different elective subjects over three semesters. This rotation ensures that every student experiences a variety of learning areas from the arts and technology disciplines.
In Semester 2 of Year 8, students will make their first elective selections. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents to engage in a discussion with their child about the subjects that interest them and the passions they wish to pursue further.
Years 9 & 10Students in Years 9 and 10 have greater choice in their learning and elective classes increase to two electives per semester, 1 elective from group A and another from Group B. They select their electives from a broad range of subjects that may include visual arts, performing arts, design and technology, health and physical education, languages, and vocational pathways(Year 10 only). These electives allow students to specialise in areas of interest and prepare for their future education, training, or employment goals. We do encourage students to have discussions with their guardians at this point still as they start to consider their Schooling/Career pathways past Year 10.
The electives handbooks below describe what elective courses are available for Year 8 in Semester 2 and Year 9/10 in 2026
Whilst Kingsford Smith School will endeavour to place each child in their first preference, due to demand, class sizes and the need to have a balanced educational program, your child may be offered their second or third preferences in some cases.
Students will make their course selections using an online preference system that is emailed to students school email addresses. This will happen towards the end of Term 2 and 4 each year. We encourage students to talk to their electives teachers, Executive teachers and parents to help make decisions about the courses that they would like to take part in next year.
Elective handbooks will be released in week 5 Term 4
